Seasonal blooms in deepest burgundy, vivid yellow and even soft lilac can be found in abundance this month at the Flower Market at New Covent Garden Market, together with autumnal foliage and berries galore!
When you next visit the market, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to Chrysanthemums! Check out this pretty variety above called Saratov. With lovely double spidery lilac coloured blooms, you'll find it at The Floral Garden Group.
British Flowers
Even in the autumn months, homegrown flowers are still available at Nine Elms. As well as dahlias at Zest Flowers, you'll also find boxes of pale pink Natalia Roselilies at Pratley. Did you know that this particular variety of double flowering Oriental Lily is pollen free?
At Pratley, you'll also find a selection of British Lisianthus, with mixed colours in boxes.
World Flowers
I'm so happy to see that as well as anemones starting to pop up at the Flower Market, Ranunculus have also begun to trickle in. Just how beautiful is this cerise pink variety at DG Wholesale Flowers?!
They also have this gorgeous multi-headed pink spray rose variety called Giselle! What a perfect flower for adding a pop of colour to an arrangement?
When you need a filler flower for a deep purple colour palette, then this Scabious at Dennis Edwards Flowers is a great choice.
And here's another filler option... Chamelaucium uncinatum also known as Waxflower at Bloomfield. According to their new labelling system, this is known as Rainbow.
For a much softer pink choose this, again multi-headed, pale pink spray rose called Sweet Flow. It's also available at Bloomfield. And when you're on their stand, check out their dyed Pampas grass, which is proving to be very popular.
These fabulous standard sized roses, with their pink/salmon petals, are called, very simply, Vintage.
The orangey-pink berries of Hypercium Magical Royal Princess make it another popular filler. And do also look out for several different varieties of rose hips at the market, when you visit. Plus for yet more rose hips, berries and seed heads, check out this report.
Nets protect the delicate petals of Tom Pearce Red Power Chrysanthemums at Dennis Edwards Flowers. You'll usually find this particular variety at the Flower Market from September through to November. By the way, if you missed it first time around, check out our special Chrysanthemum report.
And yes, they're back! Tulips, like this gorgeous Purple Prince variety, are making a very welcome return at several wholesalers.
And this variety of Statice, Limonium Safora Dark Blue, with its long vase life is proving to be a big hit with customers.
British Foliage
Head to GB Foliage for British berried ivy by the trolley load, just the ticket for adding a touch of greenery to bouquets.
Or if you need foliage with a more autumn specific colour palette, how about this homegrown Cotoneaster, with its orange-red berries?
Or how about this Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) at Porters Foliage?
World Foliage
Quercus rubra also known as Red Oak is much in demand for autumn arrangements.
British Plants
L Mills is a great place to visit if you're on the look-out for homegrown plants. This month, as well as trolley loads brimming with cyclamen and pansies, you'll also find these beautifully scented Pinks.
World Plants
Staying with pink petals, Arnott & Mason have Azalea plants in an array of different sizes. And I'm told that over the coming months they'll be getting even more stock in-store including large standard and ball varieties.
At Evergreen, it's so lovely to see Hellebores have returned. And this particular variety is called Helleborus orientalis ViV Victoria.
Head to the back of their stand for shelves upon shelves full of bulbs for spring/summer 2020. Choose from Muscari, Fritillaries, Crocus and Galanthus to Hyacinths, Alliums, Tulips and Narcissi.
If you're looking for large, lush hanging plants, then you're in luck! Head to Quality Plants for these amazing Cissus rhombifolia Ellen Danica. The plant is also known as Grape Ivy, because its leaves resemble those of grapevines and its small, dark berries resemble grapes.
Sundries
Environmental floristry, also referred to as sustainable or green floristry, is currently a very popular trend in the industry. If you're looking for a foam-free way of creating a tablecentre, The Flower Store (part of Bloomfield) have a wonderful selection of recycled plastic vases in different sizes with pillow cages to support your flowers and foliage.
Also proving to be a hit is their eclectic assortment of small glass vases, which they have available including clear Victoria glass vases, plus these purple and clear glass vases below, which also work well as votive holders.
You may have read our recent blog post about the new sundries wholesaler Lavenders of Covent Garden? Well, this is their new manager John, who used to work at their sister company Whittingtons. Should you have any questions, when you visit the stand, don't hesitate to ask him. As well as an extensive Christmas department, they also have a dedicated dried flowers area, which is going down a storm with customers!
So, I hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of the In Season report and it’s given you lots of inspiration! As always, it features just some of the many floral, foliage, plant and sundry highlights at the market this month.
