With cooler early mornings heralding the coming of autumn, feast your eyes on all the stunning seasonal flowers, foliage, plants and sundries available this month at the Flower Market!
Head to Pratley's British stand for boxes upon boxes of these homegrown golden-yellow Chrysanthemum 'Migoli' above.
British Flowers
Whilst you're there, also check out their Zinnias, which will be around until the first frost. They're sure to add a vibrant pop of colour to your designs.
Looking to add texture and movement to an arrangement with a more muted colour palette? Then how about this Bronze Amaranthus? Or you may prefer it in red, which they also have on display.
And as well as Sedum, pictured below, Pratley is also one of the stands to visit for British Gladioli, Dahlias, Lisianthus, Statice, Asters and even Fountain Grass.
For trolleys packed full of homegrown Hydrangeas, head up the corridor to GB Foliage.
Then pop across to Zest Flowers and visit their dedicated British Flowers area. As well as this beautiful Green Amaranthus, you'll also find several different varieties of Hydrangeas, Dahlias, Zinnias and beautifully scented Roses ... the latter I highlighted in last month's report.
World Flowers
DG Wholesale Flowers is where you'll also find British blooms at the Market, including Dahlias. However, this month, we're going to shine the floral spotlight on David's extensive Hydrangea offering. Below you'll see him with a stunning variety called Mon Amour Aubergine.
And here's a close-up...
Staying with purple coloured blooms, on display they also have these fabulous Artichokes, which would look amazing in a seasonal vase arrangement.
Meanwhile over at the Floral Garden Group/A Goodchild, you'll find this unusual Gerbera variety with spikey petals called Pink Springs.
A sure sign that autumn is on its way is when you start seeing Rubus at New Covent Garden Flower Market. You'll find it this month at Bloomfield.
Masses of delightful Dahlias continue to be available including this variety called 'Karma Yin Yang' featuring deep purplish-red petals with white tips at Bloomfield. By the way, just in case you missed it, here's a link to our recent florist's guide to dahlias.
And did you read last year's florist's guide to euphorbia? Well, Euphorbia's started to appear again at the Market. And this month, you'll find Quicksilver at Dennis Edwards Flowers.
Growing not only in our gardens, but also gracing several of our traders' stands are wonderfully fragrant Chocolate Cosmos. With the Latin name of Cosmos atrosanguineus, you'll also find it at Dennis Edwards Flowers.
Returning to yellow again, how striking are these Sunflowers?
Helenium 'Kupfersprudel' with their orange-red blooms can be found in bud at Zest Flowers.
And that's where I had the pleasure of bumping into the fabulous florists, Kathleen (left) and Tove (right) from Mary Jane Vaughan, who were selecting and buying flowers for an upcoming event. Do check out their beautiful Instagram account to see examples of their stunning wedding and event designs.
British Foliage
At our wholesale foliage specialists this month, you'll find British Variegated Ivy at GB Foliage.
Meanwhile over at Porters Foliage, there's homegrown Berried Ivy in abundance.
British Cotoneaster is also back at the Market.
And if you're looking for lots more foliage inspiration, check out the displays at Porters Foliage. Don't hesitate to ask the team there if you need any assistance.
World Foliage
Also known as Chinese Silver Grass, Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten' with its fluffy arching stems is perfect for adding movement and a textural interest to arrangements.
British Plants
Homegrown Heuchera plants in a spectacular array of different colours can be found this month at L Mills.
World Plants
Alocasia plants are renowned for their large, striking leaves. However, have you come across this amazing variety called Alocasia Zebrina? Its name is derived from its black and white striped stems. You'll find it at Arnott & Mason.
They also have a wonderful range of mini plants, which are proving to be a big hit for customers who are making on-trend terrariums. Choose from Maidenhair Ferns and Peperomia to Carnivorous Plants.
Over at Evergreen Exterior Services, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to Calluna vulgaris, commonly known as Heather. This particular pink variety is called 'Loki'.
Opuntia, commonly called Prickly Pear, is a genus in the cactus family. And it's going down a storm at Quality Plants!
Sundries
If it's faux plants you're looking for, then head upstairs at Whittingtons for their range of artificial greenery, from topiary to green plant walls, they've got you covered.
And yes, it may only be September (!), but there's already demand for Christmas decorations. Upstairs at Whittingtons, you'll find a wide selection of artificial wreaths and downstairs, you'll find yuletide baubles and decor aplenty.
So, I hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of the In Season report and it’s given you lots of inspiration! As always, it features just some of the many floral, foliage and plant highlights at the market this month. You'll also find Oxypetalum coeruleum, Crocosmia 'Red King', Brassica, Chrysanthemum Etrusko White, Lisianthus 'Bohemian Choco', Echinops, Laurel and Rhododendron foliage, Oxalis triangularis, Ficus elastica Robusta and Aechmea plants ... to name but a few!
