A very Happy New Year to you all! Now that New Covent Garden Flower Market is back in full swing, let's take a look at all the fabulous flowers, foliage, plants and sundries you can expect to find there this month, starting off with these beautiful 'Blue Diamond' tulips at D G Wholesale Flowers.
British Flowers
Bringing a very welcome burst of floral sunshine to the Market are these 'Fortune' daffodilsfrom Lincolnshire, with their yellow petals and orange trumpets. They're available at Pratley...
...where you'll also find boxes upon boxes of Carlton, Golden Harvest, Tamara, California and outdoor daffodils. Plus there are narcissi aplenty, including this variety called 'Martinette'.
World Flowers
Forsythia has just started to come in and you'll find it at D G Wholesale Flowers.
And as we're now in peak tulip season, there's a stunning selection available throughout the Market. You'll find wraps of single, double, parrot, fringed and French varieties in abundance. Check out these French tulips called 'Maureen'.
...'Orange Princess' double tulips at Alagar...
...and 'Mascotte' fringed tulips at S Robert Allen.
If you missed it first time round, do take a read of our Product Profile Report on tulips.
Perfect for wedding flower designs are these pretty pink ranunculus at Zest Flowers.
Have you seen this type of ranunculus before? It's a Pon-Pon ranunculus and this particular variety is called 'Malva'. You'll find it at Bloomfield.
I love the frilliness of the petals on these pink Scabiosa atropurpurea flowers.
There are exquisite David Austin 'Edith' roses at Dennis Edwards Flowers? They have gold and warm peachy toned petals in the centre of each bloom, contrasting with pink outer petals.
Now, for something completely different! Would you believe that this is actually aloe vera? You'll find it at Alagar.
Just how gorgeous is the pastel colour of this lisianthus (Eustoma) called 'Falda Apricot'?
Have you heard that there's now a beautiful new ivory Avalanche rose available? It's called 'Four Seasons' and you can find it Bloomfield. Such a perfect flower for wedding designs...
With spring just around the corner, blossom has started to appear, with Chaenomeles (Japanese quince) at Dennis Edwards Flowers.
If you're looking for darker hues for your floral designs, how about this variety of astrantia at D G Wholesale Flowers called 'Prima Ballerina'.
Or these 'Coffee Break' roses with their dark orange petals at Dennis Edwards Flowers.
British Plants
At L. Mills, there are lots of trays of polyanthus in mixed and single colours. Mark from Collier & Company said that for outdoor displays, they're a great replacement for cyclamen plants, which have been attacked by vine weevil. Apparently, due to the unseasonably warm temperatures we've had over the last couple of months, vine weevil is proving to be a real issue this winter.
World Plants
At Evergreen Exterior Services, you'll find Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' plants. They're available either as trays of 15 pots or larger individual specimens.
Or if it's bulbs you're after, how about these 'Blue Magic' muscari (grape hyacinths)? In bloom, their petals are bright sky blue with white rims.
Plus there are also crocuses, hyacinths and narcissi including 'Tête à Tête' and 'Bridal Crown'.
Greenery wise, they have Muehlenbeckia plants, which have such dainty leaves.
Meanwhile, over at Quality Plants there are these prickly succulents called Haworthia fasciata.
They also have trays of mixed Italian herbs...
...and asparagus ferns too.
If your customers are missing their Christmas trees, why not suggest an indoor tree, like Beaucarnea (elephant's foot)...
or Dracaena 'Janet Craig'? You'll find them both at Arnott & Mason.
British Foliage
Outside on Foliage Row, there are containers brimming full of variegated berried ivy at Porters Foliage...
...where you'll also find Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) in flower.
Whilst over at GB Foliage, there's a profusion of catkins! Not only birch catkins...
...but alder catkins too.
And they also have prunus blossom. Zak tells me that because of the warmer than average winter temperatures it's available earlier than normal.
Sundries
A very popular line at The Flower Store, which is part of Bloomfield, are these recycled glass jars, which come in a range of sizes. Kim mentioned that they're just so versatile as you can use them either as vases or terrariums.
Here are some examples: McQueens, Scarlet & Violet and Hiding in the City.
They also have this design with handles.
Or if it's wooden crates you're after for storage or displays, they have sets of six and individual larger crates too.
So, I hope you've enjoyed reading this month's report and it's given you lots of inspiration! As always, we'd love to hear from you if you have any comments or questions. Simply fill in the boxes below.
