Chapel, Pillar, Tapered, Household, Dinner, Ball, Tealight, Floating and LED...all different types of candles you'll find at New Covent Garden Flower Market. Plus there's an amazing selection of candelabras, candlesticks and candle holders too!
Candlelight, especially over the festive period, creates such a magical atmosphere at events including intimate dinners, spectacular parties, romantic weddings and of course, scrumptious Christmas lunch. And we're delighted to share with you an overview of just some of the many candles and receptacles that you'll find at Nine Elms.
Background
For thousands of years, candles have been used as a source of light and to illuminate celebrations. Did you know that the word candle has its origins in the Latin word candere meaning 'to glow or shine'?
At the Flower Market, you'll find a magnificent variety in all shapes, colours and sizes at our sundries suppliers, Whittingtons, C Best and The Flower Store.
Types
Chapel
A chapel candle is cylindrical in shape with a pointed head, like a pyramid. They're mainly available in ivory and can be found in a wide selection of heights and diameters.
Heights can range from 50-500mm and diameters from 22-100mm. For example, 265/50mm candles, as shown below, have a height of 265mm and a diameter of 50mm.
Whereas these 75/50mm candles are much squatter in shape, having a height of only 75mm and the same diameter of 50mm.
Chapel candles are available in other colours apart from ivory, however they usually need to be ordered as they're bespoke. You should allow three to four weeks for them to be ready. Here's an example of gold chapel candles.
Pillar
A pillar candle is cylindrical in shape and differs from a chapel candle in that it has a flat head. This type of candle is available in a wide range of colours in varying heights and diameters. Here's are examples of gold and silver metallic pillar candles.
You'll find white rustic candles, plus an extensive selection of other colours too.
Tapered
A tapered candle is also cylindrical in shape. Thinner than a chapel or pillar candle, it narrows slightly from a wider base to a conical tip. You'll find them available in lots of different colours from ivory, white, rubin red, dark red, turquoise and black to limone, rose baby pink, fuchsia, lavender, purple, silver and gold.

Household
Household is how these tall and narrow candles with a flat head are described. And they're available in light grey and black.
Dinner
If you're looking for narrow metallic candles, then check out these fabulous gold dinner candles.
Ball
Spherical-shaped ball candles are available in a range of different diameters and colours, including white...
...and rustic anthracite.
Tealights
A tealight, sometimes referred to as a nightlight, is a candle in a thin metal or clear plastic cup or 'jacket', enabling it to liquefy completely while lit. This type of candle is available with different burn times, such as four or eight hours.
Floating
A floating candle floats when placed on water, due to its weight and round shape. Tubs of this candle type come in a range of different colours from rose baby pink, rubin red, dark red, lavender and purple to white, black, limone, turquoise and fuchsia.
They're also available in a larger size, in ivory and white.
LED
Flameless candles, in the form of LED candles, are a great alternative to traditional wax candles. Looking very realistic, they're perfect for venues which do not allow naked flames. There are different types. For example, there are some illuminated by a small light bulb and others have a flickering flame.
You'll find not only tealights...
...but pillar candles too.
And some even have remote controls, would you believe?!
Candelabras, Candlesticks & Candle Holders
Now it's time to take a look at some of the fabulous candelabras, candlesticks and candle holders available at the market.
In white, black, gun metal, silver and gold finishes, you'll find candelabras with five and seven arms. And if you'd like a closer look at any of the designs, simply ask one of the salesmen to lift them down for you.
